注文している Eleanor Catton の "The Luminaries" がまだ手元に届かないので、場つなぎに John Williams の "Stoner" を読んでいる。というか、もうほとんど読みおえた。とてもおもしろい。
これはたしか、去る７月ごろだったかアマゾンUKで見かけ、表紙が気に入ったので入手したものだ。いま検索すると、古典小説部門で第６位（Kindle版は第５位）。レビュー数180で星４つ半と、たいへんな人気を博している。
読みはじめて気がついたのだが、これはなんと1965年の作品である。だから古典小説ということになるわけだが、どうしていまごろ評判になっているのだろう。

なるほど、そういうことでしたか。じつは巻頭に John McGahern が序文を寄せているので、それを読めばもっと詳しい事情がわかるかもしれない。McGahern といえば、"By the Lake" [☆☆☆☆] でノックアウトされた作家である。ざっと目を通してもよかったのだが、ぼくは書誌的な知識にさほど関心がなくパスしてしまった。
書き出しはこうだ。'William Stoner entered the University of Missouri as a freshman in the year 1910, at the age of nineteen. Eight years later, during the height of World WarⅠ, he received his Doctor of Philosophy degree and accepted an instructorship at the same University, where he taught until his death in 1956. (p.3)
帰りのバスの中で読んだのは1954年のエピソード。Stoner が死の準備をはじめたところである。ぼくも四捨五入すれば同い年なので他人事ではありません。
このまま一気に読んでもいいのだが、水曜日は晩酌デーと決めている。レビューは明日にでも書きましょう。
