"The Red and the Black"

.... Julien discovered himself to be a total coward. Death for the first time appeared horrible to him. He thought of the state of putrefaction his corpse would be in two days after the execution, etc, etc.' (p.517) '.... Julien began to weep copiously, and wept at the thought of death. Little by little it came to him that if Mme de Renal had been in Besancon he might have confessed his weakness to her ...'(p.518)
Just now I am a coward, he chanted to himself over and again ― but no one will know of it.' And now here is a witness, whom everyone will believe, and who will testify .... how weak I have been in the face of death! I will have been a coward in an ordeal with which everyone is familiar!' (p.520)
Juilen's philosophy might very well be valid, but it was of a nature to make him welcome death.' (p.522) 'I have loved truth ... Where is truth? ... Everywhere hypocrisy, or at least charlatanism, even among the most virtuous, even among the greatest ....' (pp.522-523)
I possessed a powerful idea of duty. The duty I laid down for myself ... rightly or wrongly ... has been like the trunk of a sturdy tree against which I leant during the storm; I wavered, I was shaken ... But I wasn't swept away.'(p.524)
But why am I still a hypocrite while I am cursing hypocrisy? It is not death, not the cell, not the dank air ― it is Mme de Renal's absence that is crushing me. If .... I was obliged to live several whole weeks shut up in the cellars of her house in order to see her, would I have any complaints?' (p.524)
