ぼくは英詩が苦手で、大学時代にほんの少し勉強した程度。いま書棚を見渡しても、詩集の原書は William Blake の "Complete Writings" しかない。それも拾い読みしたことがあるだけで、黄ばんではいるがきれいなものだ。邦訳版のシェイクスピアの『ソネット』も、T.S.エリオットの全詩集も埃をかぶったままである。
というわけで、"Possession" に登場するヴィクトリア朝の二人の詩人、Randolph Henry Ash と Christabel LaMotte の詩を十分に理解・鑑賞できた自信はない。読む人が読めば、いかにも本物らしい出来ばえにさぞ感心することだろうな、と想像はしたのだが、ぼく自身、すっかり感服とまでは行かなかった。
それゆえ、雑感で述べたように、早い段階から「Ash と LaMotte は文学的にどういう意味で偉大な詩人だったんだろう、と疑問に思った」ものの、この点については多分に Byatt の「力業」を信じるしかない。ほら、この詩を読めば、彼らの偉大さがわかるでしょ、というわけである。
ただ、ジャンルとしては物語詩、叙事詩が多く、内容的にはファンタジー風のものが目立ったように思う。もちろん愛がテーマの作品もあった。手っ取り早く、二人の初出の詩から冒頭だけ引用しておこう。'These things are there. The garden and the tree / The serpent at its root, the fruit of gold / The woman in the shadow of the boughs / The running water and the grassy space. / They are and were there. At the old world's rim, / In the Hesperidean grove, the fruit / Glowed golden on eternal boughs, and there / The dragon Ladon crisped his jewelled crest' (p.3 Ash) 'The Thicket is Thorny / Up snakes the glassy Tower / Here is no sweet Dovecote / Nor plump Lady's Bower / The wind whistles sourly / Through that Sharp land / At the black casement / He sees her white hand' (p.40 LaMotte)
こんな断片だけでは何とも判断しようがないし、そしてもちろん「十分に理解・鑑賞できた自信はない」。が、ぼくは正直言って、こういう詩はあまり興味がない。Blake の詩とくらべてみよう。'Love seeketh not Itself to please, / Nor for itself hath any care, / But for another gives its ease, / And builds a Heaven in Hell's despair./ .... Love seeketh only Self to please, / To bind another to Its delight, / Joys in another's loss of ease, / And builds a Hell in Heaven's despite.' ("Songs of Innocence and of Experience" Oxford University Press, p.211)
上の二人の詩人は19世紀中葉の人物という設定だが、Blake の詩は1794年の作品である。つまり Blake のほうが古い。それなのに内容は現代に通じるものがある。人生の真実がとらえられているからだ。ところが Ash と LaMotte のほうは……
架空の詩人と実在の詩人をくらべる無謀さは棚に上げよう。とにかくぼくは最初から、本書の主役 Roland と Maud が何でこんな詩に be possessed「取り憑かれて」いるのかよくわからなかった。それがつまり、「Ash と LaMotte は文学的にどういう意味で偉大な詩人だったんだろう」という疑問につながったわけである。でもまあ、Byatt の「力業」を信じるしかありませんな。
