話としてはおもしろかったのにな、というひとことに尽きるかもしれない。
主人公の中年男 Simon は、自分の子ではない少年 David の母親を捜しに、未来社会テーマのＳＦを思わせる Novilla の街にやってくる。その動機とはべつに、Simon は出会う女性に関心をもつ。早い話が、助平心ですな。
それゆえ、細部は省略するが、基本的に「希薄で無機的な関係しか結べない」ことにうんざりした Simon は、いちおう性的な関係のある Elena とこんな会話をかわす。
'If relief is what you are after," says Elena, 'if getting relief will make life easier for you, there are places where a man can go. Haven't your friends told you about them, your male friends?'
'Not a word. What precisely do you mean by relief?'
'Sexual relief. If sexual relief is what you are after, I need not be your sole port of call.'
'I am sorry,' he says stiffly. 'I didn't realize you looked on it that way.'

He was in fact lying when he told Elena he knew nothing about places where men could go. Alvaro has recently mentioned a club for men not far from the docks called Salon Confort. (pp.136-137)
「希薄で無機的な関係」の一端がうかがえるくだりだが、とりわけ男性読者なら、この Salon Confort がどんなところか大いに興味をもつことだろう。ところが実際、Simon が訪れてみると、それがまた「システムとしては能率的だが、希薄で無機的な関係しか結べない」施設になっている。ほんの一例だが、このようにディテールをしっかり書きこみながら、「フシギな世界」を構築しているところが本書の魅力のひとつである。
けれども……おっと、ここで晩酌タイムとなりました。
