本書の舞台となった世にも不思議なサーカスについて、登場人物のあるマジシャンがこう述べている。'This is not magic. This is the way the world is, only very few people take the time to stop and note it. Look around you. ...Not a one of them even has an inkling of the things that are possible in this world, and what's worse is that none of them would listen if you attempted to enlighten them. They want to believe that magic is nothing but clever deception, because to think it real would keep them up at night, afraid of their own existence.'
これを聞いた相手が 'But some people can be enlightened.' と口をはさむと、マジシャンはさらに続けて言う。'Indeed, such things can be taught. It is easier with minds that are younger than these. There are tricks, of course. None of this rabbits-in-hats nonsense, but ways of making the universe more accessible. Very, very few people take the time to learn them nowadays, unfortunately, and even fewer have natural access.' (pp.380-381)
ぼくは本書の「夢の世界」「壮大なイリュージョン」を大いに楽しみつつ、その一方、本書に「非現実を描く…必然性」はあるのだろうか、ここには「現実を現実のままに描くだけでは描ききれない現実、非現実的な設定によってありありと浮かびあがる現実」――そういう「非現実の現実」が描かれているのだろうか、ということをときどき考えていた。そこで出くわしたのが巻末にほど近い上の一節である。要約すると、「現実にはありうるのに一見不思議なことがこの世にはたくさんあるが、それに気がつく人間はほとんどいない」ということだろうか。
まあ、そのとおりかもしれません。それに、もし本書にそういうメッセージがこめられているのだとしたら、ここにはたしかに「非現実を描く…必然性」があり、「非現実の現実」もしっかり描かれていることになる。
だが、上の言葉はかなり唐突で、本書は主筋にしろ「摩訶不思議なショー」にしろ、「読んでいるだけで目もくらむばかり」、ただただおもしろい、というのが率直な感想である。再読してみなければ断定はできないが、このメッセージにつながる布石が随所に打たれていたとはどうも思えないのだ。
とすれば、「現実と非現実の混淆する世界を現出することによってしか描きえない人間の現実とは何なのか。その意味がしかと伝わってこない憾みがある」というぼくの注文も、あながち的はずれではないと言えるだろう。
