これはきのうのレビューで紹介したとおり、たしかに話としてはおもしろい。「現実とフィクションのコラボレーション」という試みも、まあいい。
問題はその話、その試みで作者が何を描こうとしているのか、である。
歯のオークションが始まり、モンテーニュやルソー、チャールズ・ラムの歯などが売りに出される。もちろん嘘っぱちに決まっているが、口上がおもしろいので楽しめる。やがて「夢とも現実ともつかぬ奇怪な事件も発生」。そこでこんな会話がかわされる。'.... Don't you realize that you've got nothing to offer? Yes, I guess I do. And the schism between the perception you have of yourself and the perception other people have of you is irreconcilable? Maybe.' (pp.87-88)
この「私」が主人公の競売人 Highway だが、詳しい状況の説明はカット。とにかくぼくが注目したのは 'the schism ....' という文言だ。ふむふむ、このケッタイな一連の話は「現実認識の分裂」を明らかにしようとするものなのか。
次にこんなくだりが目についた。'When Highway first began to recount his stories to me, I thought he was a compulsive liar. But then, living with him, I realized that it had less to do with lying than surpassing the truth.' (p.149)
この「私」は、Highway の口述する 'dental autobiography' (p.110) を記録する係の若者である。彼によると、'He [Highway] was a man who truly loved material objects. And his love for them went beyond their real, material; for him, their value lay in that thing that, in some way, they silently enclosed.' (p.151) 'Highway finally put into practice the now full-fledged theory of his famous allegoric method, where it is not objects that are sold, but the stories that give them value and meaning. The allegorics were, according to Highway, "postcapitalist, radical recycling auctions that would have the world from its existential condition as the garbage can of history." ' (p.157)
かなり哲学的な説明だが、ぼくの見るところ、ケッタイな話とこの哲学談義のあいだにも schism があるように思えてならない。上のくだりを読んで、なるほど、そういうことだったのかと合点する読者もいるのかもしれないけれど、勘の鈍いぼくにはピンと来なかった。
要は、表面的な現実の奥に潜む真理を掘り起こす上で、アレゴリーや「現実とフィクションのコラボレーション」は有効な手段である、ということなのかもしれない。なんとなくわかるが、では、そういう物事の表裏の schism を乗りこえて明らかにされる真実とは具体的に何なのか。それがぼくには見えてこないのである。
