冒頭に登場する 'Führer' はやっぱりヒトラーですな。ただ、Ursula pulled the trigger. / Darkness fell. (p.14) とあるので、このヒトラーは射殺されたはずだが、その後……というのは伏せておこう。本書のタイトルと関係があることだけは間違いない。
ともあれ、フシギな事件はさらにつづく。Ursula が5歳のとき、いたずら好きの兄が編み物用の人形を窓の外へほうり投げる。それを取り戻そうと、Ursula は屋根の上に足を踏み出す。The slates were slick with ice and Ursula had barely placed her small, slippered foot on the slope beneath the window before it slid out from under her. She let out a little cry ..... There was no parapet to buffer her descent, nothing at all to stop her being propelled into the black wings of night. A kind of rush, a thrill almost, as she was launched into the bottomless air and then nothing. / Darkness fell. (p.66) 今度こそ、ほんとに一巻のおしまいだ！
と思いきや、次の次の章では、こんな「展開」になっている。Ursula had been about to plunge out of the window in Queen Solange [the knitting doll]'s wake, intent on delivering her from the no man's land of the roof, when something made her hesitate. A little doubt, a faltering foot and the thought that the roof was very high and the night very wide. そこへ姉が現われ、一計を案じる。Pamela used an old lacross-net tied on to a walking cane to trawl Queen Solange back from the icy depths of the roof. (p.73) このあと Ursula が元気に生きていることは言うまでもない。ゾンビか!?
つまり、きのう紹介したエピソードよりもさらにフシギ度が進み、明らかに別ヴァージョンの物語になっているのだ。このあたりの矛盾にかんする説明はいっさいない。
ぼくの読み間違いではなく、え、ここで Ursula はたしかに死んでるよね、と確認した結果、かなりネタを割ってしまったが、とにかく以上が本書の基本的なパターンである。
こういう話は、おもしろいと言えばおもしろい。が、このパターンがずっとつづくと、どうせまた助かるんだろ、と思ってしまい、サスペンスが薄れてしまう。これもクイクイ度の落ちる一因だ。
