いやはや、こんな絶不調は生まれて初めて、というほどの絶不調。このところ腰痛がひどく、きょうはついに欠勤してしまった。どうやら背骨の下部の関節が炎症を起こしているらしい。痛みがずっと続くようならヘルニアやガンの疑いもあるので、MRIを撮って調べないといけない、と医師に言われた。ガンですか。まだ読みたい本や観たい映画ものこってるんだけどな。
というわけで、10日ほど前だったか、本書のちょうど中盤に差しかかったところで Women's Prize for Fiction 受賞の朗報を聞き、「あと半分、がんばって読みます！」と宣言したものの、通勤途中にボチボチ読むのが精いっぱい。雑感にも書いたように、序盤から賞レースの大本命と思っていただけに、一気に通読できなかったのがとても残念だ。
受賞のニュースが飛びこんできたとき、たまたま読んでいたのが次の一節である。"You think you have a normal family," Nate says, as he's straining on the toilet. I am breathing through my mouth and trying to listen attentively. "And then something like this happens, that's not so normal." An enormous explosion escapes him. "I don't mean this," he says tapping the bowl, "I mean Mom and Dad .... In just a phone call, your life changes ...." An enormous bellowing belch from his behind fills the air with fumes. "Sorry," he says. (中略) he suddenly says, "I'm gonna barf." I pass him the trash can, which luckily has a plastic bag in it. And he barfs and expels at the same time, and I feel bad for the kid. (p.243)
主人公 Harry は、やむをえない事情で弟の息子 Nate [Nathaniel] と娘の Ashley の面倒を見るようになる。娘相手のほうもケッサクなシーンがあるのだが、文字で紹介するのはちとはばかられる。上から下から、という上記のシーンも相当なものだ。
