救いを求め、'somewhere, something good existed' と思って Imber の田舎に帰った Dora が目にしたのは、もちろん鐘である。詳しい状況についてはネタバレの恐れがあり省略。とにかく、彼女は Toby 少年から〈その鐘〉の話を聞いて昂奮する。'Dora, who felt no doubts either about Toby's story or about the identity of the object [the bell], was suddenly filled with the uneasy elation of one to whom great power has been given which he does not yet how to use.' (p.197)
ここで鐘に関係する前後の大きな流れを確認しておこう。まず Dora は、鐘は innocence の象徴、鐘は鳴ることに意味がある、という James の説教を興味ぶかく拝聴。次にロンドンのナショナル・ギャラリーで、展示作品に 'something real and something perfect' を見てとり感動、啓示を受ける。それが上の 'somewhere ....' という思いへとつながる。そんなときに 'great power' うんぬんと来るわけだ。
そのあと今度は、前々回紹介した Michael の講話があり、そこで彼は鐘になぞらえ、人間の 'spiritual energy' について説く。これを聞いた Dora の感想は特にしるされていないものの、少なくとも上の 'great energy' との関連性は認められよう。
こんな記述もある。'he [Toby] was infected too by her [Dora's] curious vision, her grotesque imagination of the return to life of the medieval bell. It was as if, for her, this was to be a magical act of shattering significance, a sort of rite of power and liberation.' (p.211) やはり詳しい説明をカットしたのでもどかしい話だが、比喩ながら 'power and liberation' とは注目に値する文言である。
これまた隔靴掻痒の引用だが、Dora はとにかく鐘を鳴らし続ける。'A tremendous boom arose as the bell, now freely swinging, gave tongue to its utmost. It returned, its great shape scarcely visible, a huge moving piece of darkness. Dora touched it again. It was only necessary now to keep it swinging. .... Dora was so astounded, so almost annihilated at the wonder of it, and by the sheer noise, that she was oblivious of everything except her task of keeping the bell ringing.' (p.268) まさしく「鐘は鳴ることに意味がある」である。
この躁状態、熱に浮かされたような一種の狂乱のあと、彼女が結局たどり着いたのはこんな心境だ。'From the tower above her the bell began to ring for Nones. She scarcely heard it. Already for her it rang from another world. Tonight she would be telling the whole story to Sally.' (p.317) Nones とは正午の祈りのことで、Sally は Dora の親友。これが本書の幕切れである。
以上のように Dora の鐘の対する態度は劇的に変化している。そのかんの事情をそっくり省いたので不得要領この上ないが、こうした変化がもう一人の中心人物、Michael の場合とまったく軌を一にしていることだけは明らかだ。彼も鐘の音（とのちにわかる音）を聞いて宗教的啓示を受け、神の存在を実感していながら、最後には 'there is a God, but I do not believe in Him.' 'whoever celebrated it, the Mass existed and Michael beside it.' という立場に落ち着いている。
一方、二人の心境の変化をよそに尼僧院ではミサがひらかれ、ハイライト・シーン以後、鐘も鳴り響いている。何度も自分のレビューを引用するのは芸がないが、もう一度だけ。「鐘はなぜ鳴るのか。その音色にはどんな意味があるのか。この問いに答えはない。が、鐘の音を聞いた人の心には、さまざまな思いがよぎったり、何もよぎらなかったりする。神とは人間にとって、そういう鐘のような存在かもしれない。もし本書の鐘に象徴的な意味があるとすれば色々と解釈できそうだが、上の解釈もそのひとつだと思う。……あの鐘はなぜ鳴るのか。それはもしかしたら、救いも絶望もない、ただ今を生きるしかない現代人のおかれた精神状況をみごとに象徴しているのかもしれない。これもひとつの解釈である」。
