小説についてなるべくネタを割らないように説明するのはむずかしい。とりわけ、本書のようにサスペンスフル、ミステリアスな作品の場合、その緊張や謎の意味を不用意に明らかにすると興味が半減してしまう。
と肝に銘じつつ、前回の続きを書こう。ぼくが Michael の立場に着目して鐘の意味を探ったのは、彼が本書の中心人物の一人だからだ。彼は鐘のことをどう思っているのだろうか。
まず雑感（４）で引用した箇所に戻ろう。'Michael Meade was awakened by a strange hollow booming sound which seemed to come from the direction of the lake. He lay rigid for a moment listening anxiously to the silence which had succeeded the sound, and then got out of bed and went to the open window.' (p.78)
これが「一種の伏線、暗示、予兆、象徴の役割を果たしている」とぼくは指摘したのだが、じつはそう書いたとき、ぼく自身、その役割についてあまり深く考えていなかった。直後の文脈だけが判断材料だった。ところがなんと、p.223に一言一句、上のくだりまでそっくり同じ場面が出現。われながらビックリしてしまった。
ここでどうしてもネタをバラさないといけない。その二回目で、'a strange hollow booming sound' が、じつは鐘の音だとわかるのである。
さて、初出の場面における Michael はこうだ。'He shook his head and knelt down at the open window, .... and began wordlessly to pray. His body relaxed. His prayer was no struggle, but the surrender of himself, with all the ill that he contained, to the Ground of his being. Gradually his serenity returned and with it a calm joy, the renewal of the certainty that there existed truly that living God in whom all pain is healed and all evil finally overcome.' (pp.79-80) つまり二つの場面を合わせると、Michael は鐘の音を聞いて宗教的啓示を受け、神の存在を実感していることになるわけだ。
次に、Michael は宗教講話で信徒たちにこう述べている。'The bell is subject to the force of gravity. The swing that takes it down must also take it up. So we too must learn to understand the mechanism of our spiritual energy, and find out where, for us, are the hiding places of our strength. .... We must work, inside outwards, through our strength, and by understanding and using exactly that energy which we have, acquire more. .... This is the struggle, pleasing surely in the sight of God, to become more fully and deeply the person that we are.' (p.204) このように Michael が鐘になぞらえて教えを説いている点も注目に値すると思う。
ところが結局、彼は前回紹介したように、'there is a God, but I do not believe in Him.' 'whoever celebrated it, the Mass existed and Michael beside it.' という立場に落ち着いてしまう。上の啓示とはまったく対照的な変化だが、このかんも当然、ミサはひらかれている。そして正確に言うとハイライト・シーン以後、尼僧院の鐘も鳴り響いている。
そこでぼくは、こうした鐘に対する Michael の接し方の変化を一つの根拠として、こんなレビューを書いたわけだ。「鐘はなぜ鳴るのか。その音色にはどんな意味があるのか。この問いに答えはない。が、鐘の音を聞いた人の心には、さまざまな思いがよぎったり、何もよぎらなかったりする。神とは人間にとって、そういう鐘のような存在かもしれない。もし本書の鐘に象徴的な意味があるとすれば色々と解釈できそうだが、上の解釈もそのひとつだと思う」。
もう一人の主要人物 Dora と鐘の関係については、次回に述べることにしよう。
