Julien Sorel は死に臨んで人間的な弱みを見せるものの、それは Renal 夫人への思い、彼女との別れがもたらす内心の葛藤である。死そのものを本当に恐れているわけではなく、「自分が破滅へ向かうと知りながらその運命を選び、死を回避する手段を提示されながら拒否した」という点において、彼はやはり tragic hero なのかもしれない。これが前回の結論だ。
一方、Renal 夫人は Julienにとって勇気を与えてくれる存在である。'But the bad air of his cell was producing its effect, his mental powers were in decline. This made him all the happier when Mme de Renal did return. .... Julien had no petty pride with her ― he told her all his weaknesses.' (p.526)
実際、'his uncontrollable passion for Mme de Renal' (p.527)、あるいは、'You must know that I have always loved you, that I have never loved any one but you.' (p.514) と告白されているような純粋な愛情が Julien の行動の原動力であったことは間違いない。そうした情熱、愛情があればこそ、彼はこんな最期を遂げるのである。'.... Julien was in courageous mood. .... Forward then, everything's all right, he said to himself, I don't lack courage at all. Never had that head been so poetic as at the moment it was to fall. .... Everything passed off simply, appropriately, and with no affectation on his part.' (p.530)
これは Julien が tragic hero に最も近づいた瞬間である、とぼくは思う。'I have been ambitious, I do not wish to blame for that ― for at that time I was according to the customs of the age.' (p.529) と彼自身、述懐しているとおり、Julien は当初、19世紀初頭の時代精神を象徴する典型的な人物として登場した。そしてその野心、プライド、才能ゆえに、'degenerate and tedious age' という凡庸な時代、あるいは 'This age is destined to bring everything to confusion. We are marching into chaos.' という混乱の時代にあって、ひとり傑出した存在となった。それが Renal 夫人を愛することによって、もともと「無垢で清純な心の持ち主」であったのが「いっそう精神的に高貴な人物」となり、内心の葛藤に苦しみながらも、みずから死の運命を選択した末、上のように勇敢な最期を遂げた。Julien はやはり tragic hero である。
……と断定したいところだが、何かが足りない。たしかに Julien は「勇敢な最期を遂げる」ことで「tragic hero に最も近づい」ている。が、それでもやはり、ニーチェや Steiner の言う意味では tragic hero ではない。これが今回の結論です。これについて詳しく述べるには、Steiner の "The Death of Tragey" にまた戻らなければならないが、それは次回ということに。
