夕がた散歩に出かけたら、途中の〈あじさいの丘〉でもよおされていたあじさい祭りはきのうでおしまい。たしかに花の色もちょっと褪せ気味だった。下の写真を撮った今月初めはみずみずしかった。「五月ばかりなどに、山里に歩く、いとをかし」と清少納言が書いたのも、梅雨いりのころだったのだろうか。
閑話休題。表題作の現代篇では、ヒロイン Ailey とクラスメイトやボーイフレンドたちとのやりとりが相当におもしろい。Ailey は大学のゼミで、アフリカ系アメリカ人として初めて博士号を取得した著名な社会学者、W.E.B. Du Bois（1868 - 1963）について討論する。Then it was time for us to discuss the reading for that week, Du Bois's The Suppression of the African Slave-Trade. ... / "Rebecca?" our professor asked. "What did you think of the reading?"/ Stroke, stroke, stroke on the ponytail. "I loved it! It was really interesting."/ "And?"/ "Du Bois didn't like slavery. Not at all."/ "All right, can you expound?"/ "Um ..."/ Dr.Whitcomb took off his reading glasses and set them on the table. "That's what you have to say, Rebecca? You have spoken fourteen words, which provide no substantive information about this text."/ ... "Ailey, What are your impressions of today's reading?"/ ... "Okay ... well ... I'd like to talk about Du Bois's social justice project in the book."/ "Go ahead."/ "It's clear that he really is outraged about slavery, as Rebecca has noted"―I turned in her direction, and she gave a begrudging nod―"but what's obvious, at least to me, is that he is making an argument about how we were mistreated by European powers since the eighteenth century, if not before―"/ "―excuse me, Ailey. Have you ever been a slave?"/ My stomach lurched at the laughter of my classmates. They were relieved he'd found another target.（pp.652 - 653）
長々と引用してしまったが、学生たちの緊張ぶりがありありと伝わってくるシーンだろう。ぼくもその昔、なんだったかの発表中、ふたことみこと発するたびに指導教授に鋭く突っ込まれ、絶句。「ま、いいだろう。つづけて」と促され原稿の先をしばらく読むと、またしても突っ込み。そんな苦い経験を思い出し、なるほど My stomach lurched とは、いい得て妙だなあと感心してしまった。
それだけでなく、Ailey は Rebecca の夫と不倫関係にあり、そのことに Rebecca も薄々気がついているようす。そんな背景を頭において読むと、she gave a begrudging nod というちょっとした仕草にもニヤっとさせられる。こうした細部への目くばりがじつにいい。
だから現代篇は「相当におもしろい」のだけど、Ailey が「一家のルーツをさぐるうち、昔の奴隷たちが手紙や写真などを通じて実在の人物となる。一種のメタフィクションであり、この工夫も秀逸。反面、重苦しさがつのる憾みもある」。
そんな展開が読みとれ、結末も見えたところでひと息ついたのがいけなかった。ふたたび取りかかる気になるまで、えらく時間がかかってしまった。やはり超大作はしんどい。もう齢ですな。
