書棚の奥から George Steiner の "The Death of Tragedy" を引っぱり出してきたのも40年ぶりくらいだろうか。ついでに、学生時代に下線を引いたところを少しだけ拾い読みしてみた。今さら言うまでもなく、不朽の名著である。死ぬまでに完読しなければ、と思いかけたが、ほんとうに実行できるかどうか。……などと駄文を書いて公開できるのも「浮薄の時代」の証左でしょうな。

残念ながら "The Red and the Black" に関する言及はなし。本書は小説ではあるが「散文で書かれた悲劇」に近い、なんて書かれていないかな、とひそかに期待したのですが。
なぜそんな期待をしたかと言うと、ぼくが今回、本書を読み返していちばん感動を覚えたのは、自分がすっかり失念していたという理由もあるものの、結末で Julien が破滅するところだからである。（ネタばらしですみません。でもま、みなさんご存じでしょうから）。そこで問題。彼は tragic hero と言えるのだろうか。
まず George Steiner による悲劇の定義を確認しておこう。周知のとおり、彼は古代ギリシアにその起源を見いだしている。'And nearly till the moment of their decline, the tragic forms are Hellenic.' (p.3) その最初の具体例は『イリアス』である。'But the Iliad is the primer of tragic art. In it are set forth the motifs and images around which the sense of the tragic has crystallized during nearly three thousand years of western poetry: the shortness of heroic life, the exposure of man to the murderous and caprice of the inhuman, the fall of the City.' (p.5)
では悲劇はなぜ起こるのか。どういう事件が悲劇と言えるのか。'The Greek tragic poets assert that the forces which shape or destroy our lives lie outside the governance of reason or justice. Worse than that: there are around us daemonic energies which prey upon the soul and turn it to madness or which poison our will so that we inflict irreparable outrage upon ourselves and those we love. Or to put it in the terms of the tragic design drawn by Thucydides: our fleets shall always sail toward Sicily although everyone is more or less aware that they go to their ruin.' (pp.6-7)
要するに、古代ギリシアの悲劇的人生観によれば、たとえば「神の不条理な定め」など人知を越えた、人間にはコントロールできない力によって破滅へと向かうのが悲劇なのだ、というわけである。話は飛びますが、これがシェイクスピア悲劇の場合なら、人間の性格そのものが「人間にはコントロールできない力」になるのでしょう。
ううむ、この定義によると、Julien Sorel はどうやら tragic hero とは言えないかも、という気がしてきた。ただし、上の Worse than that 以下は彼にも当てはまりそうなフシがある。しかし、それらしき箇所をここで検討すると、これはほんとうにネタばらしになるかも……。
と、ここで悲劇に関して絶対に外せない「不朽の名著」を、少なくともぼくが読んだことのある本をもう一冊思い出した。ニーチェの『悲劇の誕生』である。……いやはや、大変なことになってきましたな。
