"Death in Venice"

Aschenbach は美少年を見かけ、その 'perfect beauty' (p.25)、'the godlike beauty of the human being' (p.28) に胸を打たれる。
his favourite motto was "Hold fast" ' (p.9) 'the idea that almost everything conspicuously great is great in despite .... was precisely the formula of his life and fame, it was the key to his work.' (pp.10-11) ほかにも、'the strains and stresses of his actual work' (p.9)、'fortitude under suffering' (p.9)、'he sacrificed to art .... the powers he had assembled in sleep.' (p.10)、'an endurance and a tenacity of purpose' (p.10)
そこで彼は自分の芸術家としての人生を 'life in the bonds of art' (p.55) と要約し、こう振り返っている。'It had been a service, and he a soldier .... art was war ― a grilling, exhausting struggle .... It had been a life of self-conquest, a life against odds, dour, steadfast, abstinent ....'
Gustave Aschenbach was the poet-spokesman of all those who labour at the edge of exhaustion; of the overburdened, of those who are already worn out but still hold themselves upright; of all our modern moralizers of accomplishment, with stunted growth and scanty resources, who yet contrive by skilful husbanding and prodigious spasms of will to produce, at least for a while, the effect of greatness.' he had made it [this life in the bonds of art] symbolical of the kind of over-strained heroism the time admired ....' (p.55)
設定されている年は、'that year of grace 19 ―, when Europe sat uon the anxious seat beneath a menace that hung over its head for months' (p.3) である。 For the past several years Asiatic cholera had shown a strong tendency to spread.'
