前回（２）では、Orwell の現代性のうち些末な問題だけ採りあげた。マスコミの意図的な情報操作など、Orwell がスペイン内戦で目のあたりにした現象が、80年以上たった今日の東洋の島国でも認められるというもので、これを紹介した理由は、あまりに些末で指摘するひとも少ないのでは、と思ったからだ。
一方、今回のテーマはあまりに陳腐で、いまさら扱うまでもないと思えるものだが、それでも避けて通るわけにはいかない。すなわち、現代人には Orwell のように、evil と戦う気概があるのか、という問題である。
"Homage to Catalonia" の冒頭はほんとうに感動的だ。Orwell がバルセロナで義勇軍に参加した前日、イタリア人の義勇兵と出会ったときの場面である。Something in his face moved me. It was the face of a man who would commit murder and throw away his life for a friend .... As we went out he stepped across the room and gripped my hand very hard. Queer, the affection you can feel for a stranger! It was as though his spirit and mine had momentarily succeeded in bridging the gulf of language and tradition and meeting in utter intimacy.（p.7）
いままで何度引用されたかわからないと想像するくだりだが、この出会いを Orwell は後年、スペイン内戦で忘れがたい思い出のひとつに挙げ、その理由をこう説明している。This man's face, which I saw only for a minute or two, remains with me as a sort of visual reminder of what the war was really about.（p.243）この前後も引用しておこう。.... the central issue of the war was the attempt of people like this to win the decent life which they knew to be their birthright.（ibid.）He [The Italian militiaman] symbolizes for me the flower of the European working class .... All that the working man demands is .... the indispensable minimum without which human life cannot be lived at all.（pp.243-244）
これは続編 "Looking Back on the Spanish War" の一節だが、本編の最後にはこんなくだりもある。This war, in which I played so ineffectual a part, has left me with memories that are mostly evil, and yet I do not wish that I had missed it. .... Curiously enough the whole experience has left me with not less but more belief in the decency of human beings.（pp.219-220）
ぼくはこうした一連の箇所をレビューで次のようにまとめた。「（オーウェルは）なにより意気に感じる男だった。ふつうの人がまともな生活を送りたいという願いを正義と感じ、その正義のために戦うことを正義と感じた。（中略）大いに幻滅しながらも、人間の良識をますます信じるようになり、良識という正義のために戦うことを理想としつづけた」。
スペイン内戦も一例だが、20世紀は「戦争と革命の世紀」だったとよくいわれる。が、より具体的には、帝国主義と（左右ふたつの）全体主義に発する戦争と革命の世紀だろう。そして21世紀のコロナの時代では、20世紀の負の遺産ともいえる、古くて新しい帝国主義と全体主義が跳梁しつつあるように見える。このとき、「現代人には Orwell のように、evil と戦う気概があるの」だろうか。
以上、あまりに陳腐な話題で、かつ、あまりに雑ぱくな感想でした。こんな駄文を亡き某先生が読まれたら、ヒドさもヒドし、と絶句されることだろうな。
