レビューでまとめきれなかったことは山ほどある。あまりに多すぎて、それをひとつひとつ拾っていくと、いつまで続くか知れたものではない。
そこで思い切って、Orwell の現代性という点についてのみ補足することにした。それも今回は些末な問題だけ。
たとえば、こんなくだりはどうだろう。As far as the mass of the people go, the extraordinary swings of opinion which occur nowadays, the emotions which can be turned on and off like a tap, are the result of newspaper and radio hypnosis.（p.227）この radio を television や internet に置き換えれば、そっくりそのまま今日の東洋の島国にも当てはまるのではないか。
Orwell は若いころから新聞に不信感をいだいていたようだ。Early in life I have noticed that no event is ever correctly reported in a newspaper, ....（p.234）それがスペイン内戦では、こんな報道の実態を目のあたりにすることになる。Nearly all the newspaper accounts published at the time were manufactured by journalists at a distance, and were not only inaccurate in their facts but intentionally misleading. As usual, only one side of the question has been allowed to get to the wider public.（p.143）ぼくはこれを読み、昨今、「（記事の）エビデンス？そんなものねえよ」とか、「感染症は煽ってるって言われるくらいでいい」などとうそぶく論説委員や報道局員がいるらしい、という話を思い出した。
一方、ぼくが昔から「レッテル思考」と呼んでいる現象の指摘もある。.... the Communist tactic of dealing with political opponents by means of trumped-up accusations is nothing new. Today the key-word is 'Trotsky-Fascist'; yesterday it was 'Social-Fascist'.（p.171）いまではさすがに Fascist と聞いてもピンとこない人が多いせいか、政敵をすぐに Hitler 呼ばわりする政治家や政治活動家がいる。ご自身こそ Hitler みたいな思考の持ち主ではないか、とぼくは疑っている。
その疑いはもっぱら島国にかかわるものだが、これは現在どこの国の話だろう。.... once in prison you never knew when you would go out, ....（p.202）くわばら、くわばら。
書けば書くほど些末なことになってきた。最後に、Orwell 先生、マジっすか、と尋ねたくなった問題が horror story about the Japanese in Nanking in 1937（p.229）。どんなエビデンスをもとにしたのか気になるところである。
これに先だって Orwell はこう述べている。.... atrocities are believed in or disbelieved in solely on grounds of political predilection.（p.228）だからぼくの質問を聞いて、そう疑うのはお前さんの political predilection だよ、と答えるのか、それとも、I warn everyone against my bias, and I warn everyone against my mistakes. Still, I have done my best to be honest.（p.153）という返答なのか。いずれにしても、スペイン内戦という本筋とは関係がない話なので、当時知りえたエビデンスがあったとしても紹介しなかったのだろう。（この項つづく）
